Spirituality In therapy
I made this page because a lot of people can feel unsure about whether and how their spiritual questions or beliefs can be a part of therapy. The deeper I go into my study and relationship with the psyche, the more I find it undeniable that there is an element of the work that goes beyond the personal, beyond the material, beyond the mind.
As my relationship to the Mystery of it all deepens, I am deeply valuing integrating spiritual elements into the work. And by spirituality, I simply mean our encounters with something larger than ourselves. Whether that be religion, spirituality, nature, love for humankind, community, lineage, symbolic exploration, and more.
For some people, this may look existential. For others, humanistic, transpersonal, symbolic, creative, or rooted in awe. For others, it may simply be a longing to reconnect with meaning, beauty, creativity, grief, or a deeper relationship with life itself.
Invitation
I want you to feel welcome to bring in your questions, your experiences, your gentle nudgings toward whatever is emerging for you at this time. It is welcome here. And it’s okay if that’s not for you either, or simply not right now.
If this is something you have been wondering about, something that has been missing for you, or something you thought you weren’t “supposed” to talk about in therapy, I want you to know it is available and it may even be essential. I want my clients to feel they can bring their most ‘out there’ experiences or most precious views about life and existence into the space. That there is room for it all.
There can be tremendous relief in no longer having to compartmentalize parts of yourself. You do not need to arrive with a fully formed spiritual identity, belief system, or certainty about what any of this means. Curiosity is enough.

You don't actually really need to do anything. If you've read this page and are thinking "Yes, more please," then you are welcome to let me know directly when we meet. But my intake already takes spirituality into consideration, so I will ask you about any meaningful belief systems or worldviews you may share in our first appointment and we can go from there. We also have the freedom and flexibility to evolve our relationship to spirituality in the work over time, by adding it in or excluding it at any time based on your needs and evolving relationship to self and others and beyond.

It's therapy. Depth-oriented, relationally grounded, clinically informed. The transpersonal dimension is woven into that container, not a replacement for it. We're not doing readings or coaching. We're doing the therapeutic work, with more of the map available to us.

That's a completely valid place to be, and honestly, a rich one. Doubt, skepticism, and spiritual curiosity can coexist. You don't need to arrive with certainty. There is no “correct” way to engage with spirituality in therapy. Some clients may want this to be central to the work, while for others it may simply exist in the background, or not at all.
